Repetition Workout

Equipment needed: Mat, Timer Title: Death By Plank Set your timer at 15 minutes. Your task is to hold yourself in the plank position as long as you can. Whenever you drop down out of the proper plank formation, you must stand up and complete 10 Burpees, then return back to the plank position. Continue this for 15 minutes.

To My Unknown Heroes

This one goes out to my unknown heroes: You’re the guy who breezes by me at a faster clip running over the bridge on a frigid morning. You make me run faster. You’re the girl with a sick body killing it front row and center in cycling who’s on top of that beat, going faster, harder and ballsier than I am. You make me push harder. You’re the chick who doesn’t give a shit that she’s the only girl in the weight room, lifting more than the dude next to her, flexing bigger muscle and MUCH bigger game than anyone in the room right now. You make me dig deeper. You’re the annoyingly hot couple at the grocery store who’s fresh from their workout in stylish workout gear with perfectly messy hair. You make me buy things like kale. And you make me sprint home and swap my lazy sweatpants […]

Fitness Is Not A Fad

Fashions will come and go, as will posers who use exercise as a way to get ‘skinny’ for summer. It’s an integral part of my life, just a few days away from the iron usually leaves me feeling sluggish, depressed and unfulfilled. For me it isn’t some phase I’m going through, it’s become a part of me. Challenging yourself, pushing yourself, constantly pursuing physical wellbeing and mental clarity. For some, they do not recognize the amazingness of training, of lifting more, of running faster. To them it’s just a way of burning calories. Oh it’s so much more. It’s empowering, it’s satisfying, it’s disappointing, it’s tiring and it’s so damn rewarding. This is something I will be doing for the rest of my life, I’ll be squatting in my sixties. I love researching, learning about weightlifting, martial arts, football, basketball, swimming, sprinting and every other sport there is out there […]

A Good Workout…

You know you have had a good workout because you feel good, and over time you are getting stronger and fitter. If you notice a decrease in strength the next time you are at the gym, you probably overworked your muscles and haven’t given them the time (and/or nutrition) to recuperate properly. Beginners (and experts alike) all want to train harder than their bodies will allow, and sometimes need to have as much discipline walking away from the gym, than getting into it. Beginners have to be especially cognizant of the fact that your muscles can grow faster than your ligaments and connective tissues can handle, and that proper recovery is critical to staying injury free. To determine if you’re working hard enough – I always utilize the “talking” factor into my workouts. If I can handle a general converstation, I’m slacking. In the fitness classes that I teach, if […]

You’re Only Hurting Yourself

After a 1.5 hour yoga session & refreshness – I noticed a few things. Often times from clients of mine or others that I know – I hear: that yoga is “not for them” due to the so-called slowness, it’s not a “workout”, they have ADD & can’t concentrate, or that they can’t stop laughing because the moves are too funny. Yet – 9 times out of 10, these same people are the ones suffering from knee issues, tight hips, sore lower backs, stiff shoulders, complain of feeling “bulky” or have overall pain after workouts. I sense a correlation. You may not burn 700 calories in yoga, but the overall benefit you’ll get from the stretching and flexibility will surpass any calorie that you burn since you’ll be preventing yourself from injuries & thus keeping your body intact to workout. So to the “yoga haters” of the world- I offer […]

Forget The Scale

One thing many people don’t realize is that many factors can influence a person’s weight which do not reflect that person’s body fat. For example, two cups of water weigh one pound. If you tend to retain water or bloat, the scale can easily rise a few pounds without a  change in what you have eaten. However, for dieters the effects of water  weight can be severe. Here’s an example of when a pound is NOT a pound: You eat an extra dessert over the weekend You weigh yourself the following day or day after The scale shoots up 5 pounds – and you believe you’ve gained five pounds of fat. Why is this NOT possible? Because you must have eaten a caloric excess of 17,500 calories to gain 5 pounds of fat. 3500 EXCESS CALORIES (by excess, we do not include your BMR and daily activity) make up 1 […]

Winter Weight Gain

As temperatures plummet experts say our appetite increases – and so can our waistline. Studies indicate that we do tend to eat more during the winter months, with the average person gaining at least one to two pounds – and those who are already overweight likely to gain a lot more.People who are affected with SAD have lower blood levels of serotonin – not surprisingly, those carbohydrate-rich foods give us a serotonin rush, so for many people winter food cravings are a way of self-medicating – as the days get shorter the need for these ‘carbo-rich comfort foods’ increases.WHAT TO DO? While cold winter weather may be encouraging us to eat more, experts say we don’t have to lose control of our appetite in the process. Here are 5 ways to get some winter comfort without packing on the extra pounds. But what is about falling temperatures that urges us […]

Exercise At Every Moment

I’ve bombarded you with fitness ideas and concepts and now I’m writing a blog about “exercising at every moment” !?!! It’s not as rough or impossible as it may seem – and chances are, it will become a habit after a short time. Here are just a few ideas that I have for you! I will continue to showcase some every week so that you can begin to “exercise at every moment” !   * Heating-Up-The-Shower-Water Push Ups, Tricep Dips & Squat Jumps We all wait for the warmer water to come on before jumping into the shower, right? Now – instead of just standing there, why don’t you drop down, perform some push ups with your hands on tub, flip it around for some tricep dip action, or jump in place and take it down into a squat. * Tanning-Bed Lunges If you’re  a regular at the tanning bed […]
